The REAL Debate: Five Guys v. In-and-Out

Sacked embassies, staggering budget deficits, and record unemployment pale in terms of the issues American’s really care about – like their burgers. And the debate between East Coast favorite Five Guys and West Coast legend In-and-On has raged for the past several years since Five Guys gained national prominence. Looks like, in both the popular vote and the Electoral College, Five Guys is the winner.

Personally, still being a West Coaster at heart, I’m an In-and-Out guy (as indicated by the three In-and-Out t-shirts I own) and so I’m a little disappointed by the results. And I’d probably prefer Chick-Fil-A to either (for both taste and political reasons). That said, I’m quite proud of the local boys being best in the land. Congratulations!

PS – Hey, Five Guys, send me a t-shirt.

Snitch Gets $104 Million of Your Tax Money!

PHOTO: This undated handout photo released by the National Whistleblowers Center, shows former UBS employee Bradley Birkenfeld who was awarded $104 million by the IRA for providing information about overseas tax cheats ? the largest amount ever awarded by

I’m all in favor of bounties for individuals ferreting out fraud and corruption, and having the guts to come forward. I am not, however, a fan of outrageous, lottery-winner like payments like this one: $104 million by the IRS. The kicker (as if $104 million wasn’t enough): the snitch himself got 31 months in federal prison for his role in the tax evasion scheme.

That’s your IRS at work, ladies and gentlemen. $104 million!!!! Indeed, the IRS’ position is wholly unconvincing.

Oh, the Misogyny!

Continuing in our series of posts sure to be labeled uniformed, right-wing and misogynistic, I offer the following from today’s Washington Post in relation to the university professor who saw fit to breast feed a sick child in front of her class on the first day of school.

The American University professor who breast-fed her baby while teaching a class was inappropriate, judgmental and flat-out absurd.

. . .

I’m guessing that nursing lawyers don’t breast-feed while taking depositions and that nursing doctors don’t have infants latched on while seeing patients. That wouldn’t be professional.

I wish Pine had turned over the lectern to her teaching assistant or maybe given the students a short reading assignment while she stepped aside to nurse her daughter to sleep. It would’ve illustrated the superwoman nature of what she was pulling off — work/life balance, the beauty of a woman’s capabilities, her trust in the teaching assistant.

Misogynistic, you say? Blind to the challenges of working mothers? Intolerant of “strong” women?

Hmm. Maybe you should take it up with the author. See what she has to say.

“Tim Kaine Appreciates Strong Women.”

Not sure that this is what Anne Holton, Tim Kaine’s wife, had in mind in her radio spot for him where she leads off, “My husband appreciates strong women.”

Unemployment’s Ripple Effect

The only thing worse than record, sustained high unemployment is when people just give up looking for a job. That is the very death of the American spirit and America’s legendary work ethic. Sadly, it appears to be most prevalent among the members of the next generation of the American workforce. And, whether you blame the current administration for it or not, it’s time for a change, if for no other reason, to bring back some kind of hope for those who otherwise have given up on the American dream altogether.

Yeah, it’s the “hopey changey” thing.

"You Didn't Build That" Comes Home

A video swirling around the internet depicts an Obamian analysis of a little girl’s school project Gotta love it. The absurdity of Obama’s statement revealed when put into simple, real world examples reminds me of how my basic explanation of the progressive tax rate to my kids revealed its fundamental unfairness.

Tan, Rested and Ready!

For a variety of reasons, I basically took the summer off from blogging. Most significantly, though, the Family Unit and I were out of town for all but three weekends. Although the vacations had their intended effect – they had me caring about little other than whether my beer was cold enough — oddly enough, I’m now more fired up on national politics than ever before – as you may have noticed from my last few posts.

Contrary to my colleague’s recent entry about being sick of the presidential election, I’m more passionate about this election than any other in my life, with the possible exception of Reagan’s first run in ‘84, but, then again, I was 15 at the time. I’m passionate because I have seen, and live with, the wreckage that an unchecked Democratic supermajority can do. Aside from the mounting debt which we all see, I see firsthand how the regulatory changes brought about by the Obama administration are strangling any economic recovery and how they are stifling free enterprise and entrepreneurism. Like you, I’ve also seen advertisements about taxing the rich more, just because they’re rich, and I’m sickened by the class warfare it simultaneously feeds and feeds upon. I see a president who can’t campaign on his accomplishments and so claims his opponent will enslave them if he wins. All this has me very, very worried about what a second Obama administration would do not just to America – but to the American spirit.

On the other hand, the Republicans have fielded an impressive team. A proven business leader who, as a Republican, worked well with the Democrats in one of the nation’s most liberal states. And a vice-presidential nominee with the courage to show his commitment to solid fiscal conservatism. Thankfully, for the most part, the Republican message is not one of divisive social issues, the economic ones being clearly sufficient to energize its base.

I’ll readily admit there have been presidential elections where I’ve phoned it in. In those campaigns, I was moderately interested, certainly wanted the Republican to win, and voted that way; but I didn’t have the passion – maybe, even anger – that I feel this time. Indeed, this election truly is different from many others. There is a clear difference in ideologies, priorities and demeanor. And, as much as I hate it when I see it in campaign literature, it truly is a turning point for America.

I’ve volunteered for more than just the door dropping or phone calling, taking a little time off from the work I abandoned this summer to work on one of the Romney campaign’s election day committees. I’m cutting checks in painful amounts, but, hey, if Obama wins I won’t be able to pay for my kids’ college anyway. And, obviously, I’m blogging. I blog not because I feel compelled to just because I’m a Republican, but because I believe in the Republican message. I believe in the Republican candidates, and I believe that, with them, we will have a better America. At any rate, I’m back and ready to teach those wayward Obama supporters a thing or two.

Oh, God!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGCDsSceEVQ&feature=player_embedded
As if the Democratic National Convention wasn’t a disaster enough, trying to put lipstick on the pig that is the Obama presidency, the Democrats just can’t quite get it together on bringing “God” into their party.

To recap, first, the Democrats pull the word “God” from their platform, to the delight of atheists everywhere. Then, rightfully, the rest of America delivers them an extra large dose of crap for it. Cowering to the pressure, President Teleprompter supposedly directs them to put it back in. Unfortunately for Barry, though, he doesn’t quite carry the weight he thinks he does (even in his own party and even at his nomination) when the motion from the floor to add it back in couldn’t gather the required 2/3 vote for passage – even after the chair called the vote several times.

What’s worst of all is how Chairman Villagrosa blatantly ignored the obvious majority vote AGAINST the amendment and approved it anyway. Simply shocking.

Maybe the Republicans’ perennial accusation of Democratic voting fraud is legit. Heck, they’re doing it at their own convention, no less!!

Murderer Gets Tax-Payer Funded Sex Change Surgery

You really can’t make this up.

Not only are the Massachusetts taxpers paying the room and board for a man who savagely murdered his wife, they’re paying for his sex change operations as the only possible means of curing his “gender identity disorder” per the 128 page order of US District Court Judge Mark L. Wolf, who, much to my surprise, is a Reagan appointee.

Pu-freaking-lease.
